Gemgliders
Gemgliders come in the same basic colors as dragons, whers, and firelizards; that is to say Gold, Bronze, Garnet, Brown, Blue and Green. Their eyes change color with their mood and they make the same basic noises as firelizards; they have green ichor instead of red blood, but do not have a second stomach and are unable to flame. Their tail is forked and holds both excretory and reproductive organs. However, they seem to lack the third pair of limbs all their cousins own as it seems to have become one with their forelimbs, combining the arms with the wings. They do not have the same flight capabilities as their cousins, able only to glide without the help of their special ability: Telekinesis. They are able to lift up to twice their own body weight with their minds alone and therefore often use Telekinesis to enable themselves to fly when gliding doesn’t cut it. They are also unable to go Between on their own.
They have a similar intelligence to that of a firelizard, communicating only with pictures and emotions rather than words, and appear to Impress in the same manner; the first one to feed them becomes their Bonded. They have hand-like paws with four ‘fingers’ each, not dissimilar to a squirrel or raccoon, though their hind feet are very similar to a firelizard’s. They are quite adaptable, able climbers and diggers both, they live in burrows in the ground having a strong need to be ‘enclosed’ in something when they sleep, out of sight of predators. Domestics might be happy enough to burrow under the covers with you or they might prefer to gather up a bunch of your clothes into a pile and bury themselves inside. They can survive in many different climates, from the harsh snowy wastes to the tropics, but they don’t seem to like a lot of heat and should be bathed in cool water often if they are kept in warmer regions. Their hide is tougher and thicker than that of dragons and firelizards, but not quite comparable to wher hide. However, it does not need oiling, though the creatures find it enjoyable when they are oiled, and simple bathing should suffice to keep them healthy.
One unique feature these creatures have that is unlike their cousins is that they bear fur. It does not cover their whole body, but they have a thick mane around their neck that starts on top of their head and flows down along their spine to end in a plume at the end of their tail, covering up the fork from above. This fur comes in a variety of colors and patterns similar to a domestic feline or canine regardless of hide color. Though markings and colors are often passed on from parents to offspring, this is not always the case. They also have a strange gem-like protrusion on their foreheads which comes in any of a variety of colors, also regardless of hide color, and which they can make glow at will. The purpose of this gem is not yet known, but it is speculated that it might have something to do with their powers of telekinesis. Why and how they can cause it to glow is a complete mystery however. They are omnivorous and will eat just about anything. Their matings are a mix of ‘flights’ and ‘runs’. The female will lead a chase and may run through underground tunnels, climb up trees, glide, and fly in any combination during the chase. The male that catches her gets to mate with her.
